Something Bad Happened:
A Kid's Guide to Coping With Events in the News
To meet the unique demands of the present moment, Jessica Kingsley Publishers has temporarily expanded its permissions policy to make available books that are uniquely poised to help children cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Something Bad Happened: A Kid's Guide to Coping With Events in the News is one such book, guiding 6 - 12 year olds and the adults who care about them through conversations about serious world events. Fear, sadness and worry are normalized, and coping skills taught with the aim of preserving feelings of safety, optimism and strength.
Please listen to this 39-minute author-reading a few chapters at a time, with your child. Keep drawing and writing supplies on hand as children will be encouraged to pause the recording to draw, write and talk about what they are hearing.
Something Bad Happened does not talk in a specific way about the current pandemic, leaving decisions about what and how much to tell children entirely in the hands of parents. Instead, this book walks children through the process of learning about and coping with scary things in the news: calming your brain; gathering accurate information; identifying helpers; dealing with feelings; and doing something positive to feel stronger, more hopeful, and more connected to the good that exists in the world.
Be well. Stay safe. And if you find this video helpful, please share it with others who might benefit.
